European Countries Challenge

Europe fits an astonishing amount of variety into a relatively small space. Fifty or so countries, depending on how the counting is done, packed into a landmass smaller than Africa's Sahara alone. Yet within those borders lie glaciers and volcanoes, medieval old towns and gleaming financial capitals, languages that share almost nothing and cultures that have been feuding, trading, and intermarrying for centuries.

Consider the strangeness hiding in plain sight. Europe has a country where the entire population once shared a phone book thin enough to read in an afternoon, and another so vast it spans eleven time zones. Some borders here are so tangled that a single village can leave travelers walking in and out of two nations without ever noticing a checkpoint.

The continent also loves a good geographical oddity. There is a spot where three countries meet at a single stone marker, and rivers that begin in one nation, gather fame in another, and empty quietly into the sea in a third. The tallest peak in western Europe wears a permanent cap of snow, while just a few hundred kilometres south, people are picnicking on Mediterranean beaches.

Then there is the matter of age. Some European institutions predate most of the world's current governments by a thousand years. A handful of tiny states have kept their independence through empires, wars, and revolutions, surviving mostly through cunning, geography, and the occasional well-placed alliance. How does a nation smaller than many airports outlast the great powers that surrounded it? Persistence, apparently, counts for something.

And beneath the surface — literally — Europe hides caves large enough to swallow cathedrals, ancient forests older than recorded history, and trade routes that carried treasure across the continent long before roads existed. Its mountains have inspired folklore, its lakes carry two or three names apiece, and its coastlines twist into shapes no cartographer could invent from scratch.

So how well does the map really hold up under pressure? Capitals, currencies, mountain ranges, microstates, and the odd witch-haunted peak all await. Some answers will feel obvious. Others will land like a trapdoor.
